Season Planning for a Football Strength & Conditioning Coach
From preseason to the final whistle of the season: blocks, a testing battery, the microcycle around match day, load monitoring, and how to follow 20 players without losing track of any of them.
The fixture list comes out in July, and half your room to manoeuvre disappears with it. Thirty-odd league rounds, a cup competition, two or three stretches with a midweek game, a winter break, and a squad of twenty-something players coming back from holiday in completely different states. From there, planning is not about designing the ideal training programme: it is about deciding what gets trained in the gaps the competition leaves you.
This guide walks through that decision end to end. How the season is structured into blocks, what to measure in preseason and how often, how the week is organised around the match, what you maintain once there is no longer time to build, how load is monitored across a large group, and how to individualise without breaking the collective plan.
1. What Changes When You Plan for a Squad, Not a Client
A club S&C coach and a personal trainer share training principles and almost nothing else. The difference is not one of scale but of structure, and it touches every decision you make.
- One calendar, not twenty. With individual clients each person has their own cycle, their own peak and their own availability. In a squad there is a single calendar, dictated by the competition, and every player sits inside it whether it suits them or not.
- A shared stimulus, individual responses. The session is the same for everyone, but a centre-back who played 90 minutes and a winger who played 12 arrive at Monday in opposite situations. The collective stimulus is an average that, as it stands, does not quite suit anyone.
- You do not set the main load. The match is the hardest session of the week and you do not programme it: the league does. Your job is to fill in around it, not compete with it.
- You share the week with the head coach. The physical space inside the week is whatever the manager leaves free between tactical work. A plan that ignores that is a handsome document nobody executes.
- The goal is availability, not improvement. A player who gains 5% on a test and misses eight rounds is a poor outcome. The metric that counts in May is how many players were available for how many weeks.
One practical consequence: season planning in a team sport is written backwards. First you fix the competitive calendar, then the congested stretches, then the breaks, and only then do you decide what content goes into each block. The other way round never fits.
2. The Season on One Page
Before dropping into weekly detail it helps to see the whole season at once, with its four periods and the purpose of each. This is the frame you fill in afterwards.

The core difference from an individual sport is that football has no peak. You are not preparing one date: you are preparing forty, spread across ten months, with an obligation to turn up in decent shape for all of them. That turns the season into an exercise in sustaining with short undulations, not a rising curve towards a target.
3. Preseason: Blocks and the Testing Battery
Preseason gives you the most freedom and is also the easiest thing to get wrong. The classic mistake is not training too little, it is piling running volume into week one with players who have not run for a month, and arriving at the first friendly with three hamstring injuries.
Block structure
- Week 1 — reintroduction. Low volume, low intensity, plenty of general strength and mobility work. The objective is work tolerance, not adaptation. This is where you collect the testing battery.
- Weeks 2-3 — accumulation. The volume peak of the year. Extensive and intermittent aerobic work, strength in both hypertrophy and maximal-strength ranges, and the first controlled exposures to high-speed running.
- Weeks 4-5 — transformation. Volume drops and intensity rises. Near-maximal sprinting, power work, specific intermittent conditioning and friendlies with increasing minutes.
- Final week — taper. Load clearly reduced, intensity retained, volume stripped out. You want players fresh for the opening fixture, not cooked.
High-speed exposure deserves a separate mention because it is the thing most often planned badly. Running above the high-intensity threshold is simultaneously the biggest risk factor and the best protection: players who reach the competition without having accumulated sprinting in preseason are the ones who cope worst with the first half of the year. Introduce it early, in small and increasing doses, not all at once in the last week.
The testing battery
Measure little and measure it the same way every time. A battery you cannot repeat in two sessions with the facility and equipment you actually have will not get repeated, and a test you only run once is of no use to anybody.

The detail everyone forgets
Record the conditions of every test: time of day, surface, footwear, temperature and what was trained in the previous 48 hours. A beep test at eleven in the morning on grass and another at seven in the evening on an artificial pitch are not comparable, and by February nobody remembers why that one reading looked odd.
4. The Weekly Microcycle Around Match Day
This is the heart of the job. The week is not numbered Monday to Sunday, it is numbered relative to the match: MD is match day, MD+1 the day after, and MD-1, MD-2, MD-3, MD-4 the days before, counting backwards. The notation is not a fashion: it means the same structure works whether you play on a Sunday, a Saturday or a Monday.
The dominant logic is alternating stimuli. Each day loads a different quality so that none of them overlaps with the recovery from the previous one, and the load peak sits as far from the match as possible.

Look at the shape of the curve: it rises on Monday or Tuesday, peaks midweek and falls over the last two days. With a single weekly fixture that curve repeats almost identically for months, and the real undulation of the season comes from double-fixture weeks and deload blocks, not from changes inside the microcycle.
When there is a midweek fixture
With two matches in three or four days the microcycle is not compressed: it vanishes. Only MD+1 and MD-1 fit, and there is no window to load. The structure that works across those stretches is this:
- MD+1: a strict split by minutes. Anyone past roughly 60 minutes does recovery; anyone who played little or nothing does the only loading session of the week, high-speed volume included.
- MD-1: activation for everyone, short, with the ball and set pieces.
- Compensation comes after, not during. Do not try to claw back the lost load inside the congested stretch. It gets recovered in the first long microcycle that follows, which you plan with more volume than usual.

5. In-Season: Maintaining, Not Building
The most important mental shift of the year happens in August. Through preseason your job was developing qualities; from the opening fixture onwards, your job is stopping them from eroding while the players compete every week. Those are different objectives and they call for different doses.
The good news is that maintaining costs far less than building. With a fraction of the preseason volume, as long as intensity is preserved, qualities hold for months. What you cannot cut is the intensity: the stimulus that maintains strength is heavy load, not set count, and the one that maintains speed is running fast, not running a lot.
- Minimum effective dose of strength. Two weekly sessions with one fixture, one with two. Few exercises, heavy loads, short sets, never to failure. Twenty well-placed minutes on MD-4 are worth more than a long session that interferes with pitch work.
- Minimum effective dose of high speed. The most neglected item and the most expensive one. Players on few minutes can go weeks without reaching high speeds, and when they come into the eleven because of an injury, they do so with no preparation for the actions they are about to be asked to perform.
- Planned deloads, not reactive ones. A reduced week every four or five, taking advantage of easier rounds or international breaks, holds up the second half of the season far better than waiting for symptoms to show.
- Progression where there is room for it. Players with limited game time can genuinely keep progressing through the season, because they have load headroom. Apply progressive overload with them explicitly instead of handing them the same compensatory session every week.
One finer consideration about who struggles to maintain what: each player's muscle profile shapes their tolerance to volume and their recovery speed. 6. Monitoring Load and Readiness Across 20+ Athletes
With twenty players you cannot keep an eye on anyone by instinct. You need a system that flags things for you, and the design criterion is brutally practical: if a piece of data will not change a decision, do not collect it.
External and internal load
- External load: what the player does. Total distance, high-speed distance, number of sprints, accelerations and decelerations, minutes played. Measured with GPS if the club has it, and with minutes and task durations if it does not.
- Internal load: what that costs them. By some distance the best value-for-effort tool is session RPE: perceived exertion from 0 to 10 multiplied by session minutes, asked individually about thirty minutes after finishing. It takes a minute and picks up things external load never sees.
The point is that neither one works alone. Two players covering the same distance can perceive very different efforts, and it is precisely that discrepancy — high external load with a disproportionate internal cost — that is the most useful signal you will get.
Readiness and availability
- Daily wellness questionnaire.Five questions scored 1 to 5 (sleep, fatigue, muscle soreness, stress, mood) before the session starts. What matters is not the absolute value but the deviation from each player's own baseline.
- Heart rate variability. Morning RMSSD gives an objective read on autonomic state, useful above all in congested stretches. It needs consistency and several weeks of baseline before it means anything; how to interpret it is covered in the guide to RMSSD and heart rate variability.
- Vertical jump as a quick check.A sustained drop in jump height relative to a player's individual reference is one of the cheapest signals of accumulated fatigue you can get.
On the acute-to-chronic workload ratio: it is a widespread tool and still useful as a flag that a player's load has jumped relative to what they had been doing, but its formulation has drawn serious methodological criticism and it should not be used as an automatic traffic light. Treat it as a prompt that opens a conversation with the player and the medical staff, never as a decision in itself.
7. Individualising Inside a Collective Plan
The pitch session is shared, but the adjustments are individual. These are the four cases that show up every single week in any squad.
- High-minutes players. Their constraint is recovery, not stimulus. Less added volume, more attention to sleep and nutrition, and short, high-quality strength work. With them, taking away usually pays better than adding.
- Low-minutes players. The worst-served group in almost every squad. They need a real compensatory session — not a gentle jog — including high-speed exposure, so they are genuinely ready when their turn comes. If their plan is the same circuit every week, they will reach the starting eleven without ever having trained like a starter.
- Return from injury. Progression is decided by criteria, not by dates: pain-free tolerance, between-leg symmetry on strength and jump tests, and a gradual, documented re-exposure to high speeds before returning to group work. The final step, running at maximal speed, is the one most often cut short and the one that produces most re-injuries.
- Positional demands. Full-backs and wingers accumulate more high-speed distance; central midfielders, more total distance; centre-backs and strikers, less volume but more accelerations and decelerations. Complementary work should reflect that difference rather than giving everyone the same thing.
In practice this becomes manageable once you stop improvising every individual session and build a small reusable catalogue instead: the compensatory block, the reconditioning block, the hamstring prevention block, the return-to-play block. 8. Keeping Records the Staff Can Actually Use
A record-keeping system earns its place if it answers quickly the questions people really ask inside a club, and those questions are always the same four:
- How much load has this player had this week and the three before it?
- Where are his test results compared with preseason?
- Exactly which step of his return-to-play progression is he on?
- How many consecutive weeks has he been available?
If answering any of them takes more than a minute, the system is not working, however thorough it looks. Three principles help: record by player rather than by session, because the questions are always about people; note the reason for a decision next to the data, because in March you will not remember why that player skipped two weeks; and let the player enter the things only he knows — RPE, sleep, niggles — because that is the only way it gets captured every day. Frequently Asked Questions
How many strength sessions fit into an in-season week?
With one fixture a week, two strength sessions are entirely manageable and are the usual reference: one with a maximal-strength emphasis and a shorter one aimed at power and at maintaining exposure to high speed. With two fixtures in seven days, one short session is realistic, placed the day after the first match and adjusted by minutes played: starters do regenerative work while those who did not play do the full session. What works worst is dropping strength altogether for months and expecting the qualities to hold on their own.
What should I test, and how often should I repeat it?
A useful battery fits into two preseason sessions: body composition, an endurance test (beep test, Cooper or Yo-Yo), a linear sprint over 10 and 30 metres, a vertical jump, and a strength assessment on the patterns you actually train, with particular attention to the hamstrings and to between-leg asymmetries. The full battery gets repeated two or three times a season: preseason, midseason and end of season. Separately, the vertical jump works well as a frequent check because it costs two minutes per player and is sensitive to accumulated fatigue; many staffs run it every one or two weeks.
How do I handle a week with two fixtures?
The microcycle is not compressed, it is replaced. Between two matches three days apart there is no room for a load peak: the day after the match you split the squad in two by minutes played, the middle day is low-load tactical work and the eve of the match is activation only. The training load you lose that week is not recovered inside that week; it is recovered in the next long microcycle. Planning in blocks of two or three weeks rather than week by week is what stops load from collapsing across a congested stretch of the calendar.
How long should preseason be, and what if it is short?
Four to six weeks is the norm, and in many competitions it ends up being three or four because of the friendly schedule. When it is short, the priority is not accumulating volume but guaranteeing the progressive reintroduction of high speed: sprinting and running above the high-intensity threshold need several weeks of increasing exposure. If you have to cut something, cut extensive aerobic volume before you cut speed exposure, and accept that part of the conditioning will be completed during the opening rounds of the competition.
Spreadsheet or a tracking tool?
