Push-Up Test

Assess your clients' upper-body strength endurance with a standardized push-up test. Compare results against normative tables by age and sex to design personalized training programs.

How to perform the test

The client should perform the maximum number of consecutive push-ups without rest while maintaining correct technique. Count only complete reps with full elbow extension and the chest touching the floor (or within 5 cm of it).

Standardized protocol

  • Starting position: Hands shoulder-width apart, body in a straight line
  • Lowering: Bend the elbows until the chest is close to the floor (about 90 degrees at the elbows)
  • Press up: Fully extend the elbows without locking out aggressively
  • Cadence: Steady rhythm with no pauses between reps
  • Women: The original test uses standard push-ups, not knee push-ups
